Ezequiel Guerisoli’s brilliantly ‘shot’ and edited machinima film Mastermind is a brilliant surreal noirish tale of a lone man searching the city for a woman who seems to be on a similar quest. All of the footage from the film was captured from the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV using mods. It’s part David Lynch, part Vanilla Sky, part Matrix, part urban crime drama. The high contrast “lighting” effects make combined with elliptical editing techniques, canted frames, a great voice over from Bill Kates, and the instrumental score all work together to create a tight, moody short film. Is our protagonist actually the victim of a conspiracy perpetrated by some unseen hand? Or is it simply madness?
